The Key

It sounds like mistrust, this issue
of locking and changing locks, of
asking-- even those we love--
to give what little they have of you

back. What is left behind becomes
burdensome to those who left
and those staying. Until everyone
has left, and in leaving, left something

of possible value. Those bearing
codes and keys for entrance care
about little else than their own lives,
locked up with our dusty remains.

Those who need access have none
and those who maintain evil intent
find entrance, and so it goes.  Value
of treasure is lost if love isn't trust;

and love must be given away until
it is the only remainder of any worth.
